Cultural Education Through Theater

About Project

Cultural Education Through Theater was a project which was prepared by the Cultheater in cooperation with MUT! Theater/ Interkulturell e.V. foundation. The project is executed in Hamburg by the support of the Germany-Turkey Youth Bridge Foundation on 22-29 October 2018.

The 24 selected trainees who were trainer candidates of drama from several theater institutions attended a training program which was prepared by Cultheater, MUT! Theater under the supervision of the professors from İstanbul University Department of Theater Criticism and Dramaturgy Dr. Nilgün Firidinoğlu and Prof. Dr. Kerem Karaboğa. The training program/workshop included cultural events, several workshops that aimed to increase the knowledge and ability of trainees in cultural education practices.

In the project, the general art director of MUT! Theater Mahmut Canbay runs the workshop titled ” Discussion of Multiculturalism with Forum Theater ” which aimed at the improvement of mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue for the people who have different cultural, ethnic, economic backgrounds.

In the İstanbul University Department of Theater Criticism and Dramaturgy Prof. Dr. Kerem Karaboğa’s workshop titled “Body beyond cultural borders”, participants discovered breath, body usage and stage energy techniques to use their bodies as instruments on the stage based on Theodoros Terzopoulos and Vsevolod Meyerhold’s acting methodologies. The participants shared their experiences and practices on the relationship between their cultural background and body language.

In the project, all participants, trainers, and coordinators watched the play “Michael Kohlhaas” based on Heinrich von Kleist’s novel which was directed by Antú Romero Nunes in Thalia Theater, Hamburg. After the play, by the facilitation of Dr. Nilgün Firidinoğlu from İstanbul University Department of Theater Criticism and Dramaturgy, the participants had the opportunity to discuss the main themes of the play such as justice, human rights and critique of power based on the dramaturgical approach of the play. Dr. Nilgün Firidinoğlu’s workshop titled “Intercultural Dialogue through Theater Criticism”, all participants tried to developed a methodology to discuss the dramaturgy of a play with the people from different cultural backgrounds.
